What Is The Claim About?

one

Microtargeting

X systematically engages in unlawful microtargeting using sensitive personal data, including political opinions, religious beliefs, and sexual orientation, in clear violation of the GDPR and DSA. By creating detailed user profiles based on behavior and enabling targeting through keywords and “follower look-alikes,” X allows advertisers to manipulate and discriminate against users without their knowledge or consent. Research by SOMI, as well as evidence from European Commission campaigns, confirms that X's practices involve the large-scale processing of special categories of personal data, which is contrary to EU law and its own advertising rules. These practices pose serious and far-reaching risks to privacy, autonomy, and democratic processes.

two

Hate speech

Since Elon Musk’s acquisition of X, hate speech on the platform has significantly increased. The new ownership has promoted unlimited freedom of expression, reduced content moderation, especially for non-English languages such as Dutch, and implemented algorithmic and policy changes that amplify polarizing and harmful content, including racist, anti-LGBTQ+, and anti-Semitic expressions. Despite its own policies against hate speech, X has failed to implement adequate safeguards, allowing the widespread of abusive and discriminatory content. Moreover, X has denied these increases, initiated legal action against critics, and restricted independent research by eliminating free API access.

three

Data breach

X has consistently neglected platform security, leading to repeated data breaches that affected millions of users. Moreover, after Elon Musk’s takeover, staffing cuts in Trust & Safety worsened security, leaving the platform vulnerable. Four major data-leaks occurred between 2021–2023 exposing users’ emails, phone numbers, and account details including pseudonymous and high-profile accounts. X's response was slow, inadequate, and anything but transparent, with delayed solutions, limited notifications to users, and misleading claims about the source of the leaked data. Experts confirm that the largest leaks (more than 400 million accounts) came from X's systems, not from public data. This revelation highlights serious shortcomings in security and accountability on the part of X.
